"What a super evening we had on Saturday, for all the right reasons! It was great to meet up with James and Ross for a re-run of last year. You guys truly are in the business not just of making meals, but of making memories.
The food was excellent once again. Particularly standing out this time for me was the loin of pork, which was delicious even before I discovered the chestnut stuffing, at which point it moved up several gears to magnificent.
Other special things we enjoyed this time around were James coming out to describe the thinking and ingredients behind each dish. I'm sure logistically that must be a nightmare, when there is so much to be done in the kitchen - but it really made the evening unique and personal. The Asparagus and Prawns were really good in the Oyster sauce - I didn't appreciate what an impact that would make, in terms of giving the dish a wonderful Thai feel. The Gin and Tonic Sorbet worked really, really well with the non-alcoholic gin (Seedlip Garden 108) that I'd been given for my birthday - strongly recommend you guys consider offering that as an option. Of course, I'm sure the sorbet was good with the alcoholic gin as well! Everybody loved the desserts - enough said. And I appreciated James coming out and introducing the cheeses, with no preparation or notes.
And of course all of that wouldn't have been possible without your patience answering my interminable questions once again - and recording all the requirements, so that everything went smoothly on the night. I'm sure your heart must have sunk when back in January I sent you that mail suggesting we do it all again for 50+1. But that never showed, and your enthusiasm and experience were invaluable - from guessing that your side plates would fit around our table (they did), to advising on the use of pastry forks for dessert (we didn't - you were right!). The entire process of working with Benson's has been a real pleasure. From the initial contact and query, to wedding itself, I have not once experienced anything less than amazing customer service. Anton has been incredibly efficient and clear in answering innumerable queries and emails, helping us to make decisions, and frequently updating quotes and function sheets as our requests evolved. Organizing a UK wedding while living in ... has not been easy but it has been made significantly easier by the way in which Benson's has communicated with us so effectively throughout the process.
I would like to thank Julie for her incredibly hard work getting the event set up and packed up. Her work was remarkable: including sleeping in her van in a car park by the site so that she could complete her set up in the morning - quite incredible really. And so helpful and friendly throughout our contact with her. It is rare to meet someone with such a willing, uncomplaining, "can-do" attitude.
The entire team who catered on the day were fantastic - chefs, wait staff, front of house manager, the bar staff - looking after our every need and making sure all our guests were looked after, fed and watered. They were brilliant and left us to relax and really enjoy ourselves without having to think at all about the running of the event.
Finally, the food. We thought the food at the tasting was delicious but we had mentally prepared ourselves for a drop in quality for the event itself when it was scaled up to feed 110. We were completely wrong. The food on the day was as good, if not better, than we remembered: it was really really delicious and so so many of our guests commented to us or our parents that it was the best wedding food they had ever had. It made us feel so glad to have fed our friends and family such an amazing feast. The pea and mint soup in the bread bowl was a great talking point and completely delicious, and then the bbq meats and salads were simply delicious. A few of our vegetarian guests also commented on how they had never been so well catered for at a wedding as they were with the salads and the aubergine. Please pass on our thanks to James who is clearly an incredibly talented chef and caterer.
I don't think we will be having a big party like this again for many many years but if we ever did you would be the immediate choice to cater it. And I would, and will, recommend Benson's to anyone having an event or a wedding in the future.
