James has been cooking since the age of 3, when, as the family legend goes, he stood on a chair by the stove and taught his Nana how to make 'rivotto' before he could even pronounce it.
He started his career as a chef at the Goblets Wine Bar, part of the Lygon Arms, Broadway, whilst studying for his catering NVQ's at Stratford-upon-Avon College in his spare time. Charingworth Manor came next before a move back to the Lygon Arms Hotel, where James started his larder apprenticeship.
After the Lygon Arms James worked at the world-renowned Claridge’s in Mayfair, London, serving Royalty, Politicians, Celebrities, and all the rest of the world. Here he specialised in canapés, buffets and starters, serving all variations of world cuisine to anywhere between 50 and 1000 people a day, all with the super-perfection that the guests expected.
A place in the semi-finals of the Academy of Culinary Arts Annual Awards of Excellence, four promotions, two Employee of the Month awards and an Employee of the Year later and it was time for new things.
Benson's Catering Limited is owned and run by James Benson.
Back in Broadway...
James decided it was time to venture out on his own, and started Benson of Broadway, offering fine dining catering to private homes and holiday houses within and around the Cotswolds. Focusing on good food and high quality, locally sourced ingredients, Benson of Broadway also provided catering for weddings, corporate events and offered cookery classes.
James quickly formed fond relationships with a number of venues and cottage companies, leading to a move to larger premises in Tewkesbury (while retaining the Broadway name!) where he oversaw the growth and development of an ever-busy event and outside catering company.
The Next Chapter
Benson's may have outgrown Broadway, but the heritage and ethos remain the same. Now Benson's Catering Limited, and with a second move to even larger premises in Gloucester, James continues to push the business forward, whilst always maintaining his flair for fine food and working closely with clients - from those intimate dinner parties to wedding banquets for hundreds of guests.
